Tell us about your experiences of Vapes and Vaping

Collaborating with AMAZE and PaCC, we're exploring young people with SEND's use of vaping as an alternative to smoking.

Tell us about your experiences of Vapes and Vaping

Healthwatch Brighton and Hove, Amaze, PaCC and Brighton and Hove City Council are working together to run a research project. We want to learn more about young people aged under 25 with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and their experiences of, and beliefs around, vapes and vaping.

This project has arisen from findings in Brighton and Hove City Council’s 2023 ‘Safe and Well at School Survey’ which revealed a rise in numbers of young people trying vapes. It also found that older children are more likely to regularly vape. Previous research on vaping has documented a link between ADHD and vaping so we are particularly keen to learn more about this group’s experiences.

As a result of these findings and the speed at which vaping has arisen as a complex issue across the country, we want to learn more.

Amaze are committed to supporting the wellbeing of young people with SEND and to hearing their voice on health issues. When we heard that young people with SEND are more likely to vape than others their age, we thought it is important to understand this better.

We will be running two surveys; one for young people aged under 25, and one for parents and carers of young people, until the end of January 2025. Information collected through the surveys will be used to identify areas to explore further in focus group sessions. Information gathered through the survey will also be used to inform support offered to young people around vaping in Brighton and Hove.

We want to find out more about:

  • Young people and their parents and carers experiences of vaping
  • Their awareness of the promotion of vaping
  • Beliefs about the potential benefits and harms of vaping
  • Thoughts around how young people could be supported to stop vaping.

To contribute your experiences and beliefs about vaping, we have two surveys available.
